The full touring party, including key personnel from SSTL such as Chairman Sir Martin Sweeting and Managing Director Andrew Cawthorne, can be seen in the group photo below.
A Morning of Insight and Collaboration
The visit spanned an entire morning, with attendees remarking on the rare and welcome spring sunshine that accompanied their arrival. However, time outdoors was brief, limited to a quick group photo before the tour commenced. The delegation first moved into SSTL’s office facilities, where Systems Engineer Katie Boulton provided an overview of the critical design and engineering activities undertaken at the start of a satellite mission build.
Inside the Cleanroom
The tour then progressed into SSTL’s production facility, where visitors donned full protective cleanroom attire, including beard covers, before entering the controlled environment. AIT Manager Louise Dickie (pic below) briefed the team on cleanroom protocols before they were given an in-depth look at six active satellite projects.
Among the projects showcased was the MULA satellite, developed for PHILSA (the Philippine Space Agency). Airbus Head of Space Systems, Alain Faure, is pictured below with SSTL’s MULA Project Manager, Ellis Elliot, and PHILSA Project Manager, Izrael Bautista.
Mike Schoellhorn also took the opportunity to discuss his initial impressions of the projects with SSTL Managing Director, Andrew Cawthorne, as seen in the image below.
A Memorable Visit
The visit concluded with a company-wide gathering, where Mike and his team addressed SSTL staff, sharing insights and perspectives on the future of the space industry.
We extend our sincere thanks to Mike and the Airbus team for taking the time to visit us – it was a pleasure to showcase our work and receive their valuable feedback!
