Celebrating the PHILSA Team’s Graduation from the SSTL Spacecraft Engineering Programme
We recently gathered to celebrate the fantastic contribution of our friends and colleagues from the Philippine Space Agency (PHILSA), who are approaching the end of their time with us here in Guildford. Since arriving in the UK at the end of 2023, 16 PHILSA engineers have been embedded within SSTL, working alongside our teams on the in-build MULA satellite — the latest milestone in the Philippines’ growing national space capability.
Their time with us culminated in a special graduation ceremony, where the PHILSA team swapped their iconic flight jackets (main pic) for crisp white attire to receive certificates marking the successful completion of the ‘SSTL Spacecraft Engineering & Manufacturing Programme’ (below pic).

The certificates were presented to each individual PHILSA engineer by SSTL Founder and Executive Chairman, Sir Martin Sweeting, recognising their commitment, professionalism, and achievements throughout the programme. (Pic below)

The PHILSA engineers have been deeply involved in every stage of the satellite’s development — from initial design reviews and systems engineering to hands-on production and assembly in our cleanroom. Their hard work, curiosity, and collaborative spirit have been a true asset to the MULA mission, and to our wider engineering community here at SSTL.

This mission, our 21st customer programme to host and train international engineers, exemplifies the power of partnership in the space sector. PHILSA and the Philippine Government’s commitment to building indigenous capability and expertise is not only advancing their national ambitions — it’s also enriching the global space community. These close collaborations bring fresh perspectives, shared learnings, and lasting professional connections that benefit everyone involved.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire PHILSA team for being such a dedicated and inspiring part of life at SSTL over the past two years. We wish them every success as they return home to continue advancing space technology in the Philippines — and we look forward to following their progress from orbit!
